Family recipes (no, the camera-giddiness still hasn’t worn off).

Meet Nikki, my one-year-old nephew and godson. More accident prone than Eugene, he bumped his head thrice and fell down twice in the four hours that Nanay, Tatay, Patty, Ian, and I visited my aunt Mama Nora (his grandma) in Taytay. Today he will teach you how to make halo-halo.

1. Cut up jelly into little cubes and shave some ice.

2. Spoon sweet beans, coconut, sweet corn, melon strips, and ube into plastic cups. (Iron Chef Nikki is not permitted to touch glass. Prevention is better than cure. And less noisy.)

3. Discuss with your sous chef (Patty) how much milk to use.

4. “Say when.”

5. Mix.

Mama Nora made us her famous sinigang na maya-maya for lunch. She used to own a carinderia, but she gave it all away to her loyal head cook because she wanted to stay at home and be with her grandchildren (Nikki, plus Sarah and Hannah, nth pair of twins in the Reyes side).

1. Gossip with the womenfolk is necessary while chopping the vegetables.

2. Pound garlic with your chopping-knife’s handle because it’s such a bother to try to locate the mortar and pestle.

3. Voila. (What happens in between is still a mystery to me.)

  2. I was just gonna say the same thing! And the mad dancing skillz 😉

  3. LOL. He’s dancing for the Chiz Curls Patty’s holding. He’s not allowed to have junk food, but we gave him a few pieces. I love that his favorite chips flavor is cheese.

  4. That he is. Such a cutie!

  5. My favourite is where he’s mixing the stuff. Iron Chef indeed. :DDD

  6. He’s an absolute sweetheart. I heart him.
