If one were to observe the earth from the moon, it would appear an unremarkable, slightly squashed blue ball, swathed in wisps of white cotton. In the vacuum of space one would not hear the roar of waves crashing on countless shores, the rumbling of volcanoes, the squeal of rocks jostling for purchase to the crust. Islands sink, mountains rise up, tectonic plates quake beneath the immense sea. Legions of scientists risk life and limb to probe the grand design of this seemingly silent planet, and though much of it is known, much more remains secret, known only to itself.

Even if one were lying down with an ear pressed to the ground, the pulse of molten rock rushing through the earth’s heart would only be a whisper.
