I just walked through the same glass door twice. Anyway, today was made of cellar doors.

1. Nessie works at a GM customer care department. Early this week, Tuesday (Detroit vs St. Louis) I think it was, complaint calls were suddenly pouring in regarding the 2007 Chevy Silverado World Series ad in Spanish. To the level of “I was really offended by it,” “We have the fucking money to buy your fucking cars, and you’re making ads for those Hispanics?” Nessie was trembling in near-fury. Oh, God. I still do not believe these people. Or maybe I do. People have been known to be disqualified from our company’s travel shows on the basis that they were Middle-Eastern or Indian or Hispanic.

One thing that ticks me off is that I still get customers who, when they find out we aren’t calling from the US pretend (yes, pretend, because they understood us perfectly till the disclosure) they don’t understand us because we have an “accent”. I know not everyone is like this, it’s just that those little things sadden and disappoint me.

This makes me glad I’m not going to be in this job by next semester. (I explained to my boss that I couldn’t commit to a thirty-hour-a-week job because of my thesis, and he said he understood. He called today and said his friend from a scientific journal was looking for a copyeditor and he recommended me. I love my boss.) Anyway, Nessie says GM did give a very good rebuttal script for future calls – how many of the Detroit players had Hispanic roots and how GM had been built with their help, and the ad was a tribute to them, etc.

What was that thing Bono said? A prayer. That we don’t turn into a monster fighting a monster. Amen.

2. Today I watched some of the best movies I’ve ever seen the whole year: The End of The Affair, Memento, The Ice Harvest, and The Departed (With Nessie and Joyce). I think I’ll go stark raving mad. I never thought Marky Mark would turn into that. And Jack Nicholson rules. Random: I SHOULD watch Maynila Sa Kuko ng Liwanag again. Back to back with Himala, maybe.

3. Did I mention Rachel Brice? I’m so going to take up bellydance.

4. Nanay texted yesterday; She’s in Tagaytay and she’s passing by QC tomorrow.

5. ZooTV’s out at Tower. Php1,400+. Gah. I’m gonna be a pauper by Christmas.

  1. The Departed was brilliant, and I also loved the original, Infernal Affairs. I thought Leo was amazing in the new one, though.

  2. Memento is one of my fave films!

  3. I’ve yet to see “Infernal Affairs”. It’s a Hongkong film, right?

  4. Absolutely blew my mind. 🙂
