Sunday morning comin’ down

Forest of lights in Digital Art Museum - Team Lab

One of the great mysteries in life: It’s so easy to wake up early in the weekends when nothing’s urgent on my to-do list, but I take ages to get out of bed during weekdays.

J remarked yesterday during Digibak at Dakila HQ (“the barricades”) that I haven’t been posting anything about the memex project lately. I guess a lot of it feels too dull for LJ – but let’s see…

At Human Nature, 2012’s theme was “only for the brave”. This year? “A future full of hope”. To be totally honest, I thought it was the cheesiest thing when D first shared that with us. Only for the brave was edgier! But I promised I’d allow myself just a little more cheese and surprises this year, so I’m going with it. Last night, talking to J, I realized it was nothing short of a miracle that we had each other, but everything conspired (forget coolness or caution or plain simple logic) to bring us together.

So, hope. I was going through my (real life) journal looking for hopeful entries and I realized how few they were. I don’t remember if it was Edith Hamilton’s mythology (jealous gods) or if it was Tita Reni (envious malignos) or if it was a church preaching (the devil hears you too) or birthday candle blowing (tell your wish to no one) that I got the germ of the idea from, but it grew like this: Keep your hopes secret lest they be thwarted. Well, hogwash.

I think I’ll start by posting some right here.

  • 2009 August 9: “The moon is up, the weather slightly Wrinkle-in-Time-ish. Change is coming. And I am ready for it.”
  • August 24: music as salvation – “You are alive, and you are the star tonight. (Electrolite, R.E.M.)” “This avalanche, I’m not afraid, come on, come on, no one can see you cry.” (Imitation of Life, R.E.M.)
  • September 6: the simplicity of life in old movies – “You Can’t Take It With You – Jimmy Stewart’s character, Tony Kirby, talking about a college research where they tried to unlock the secret of photosynthesis to make a big machine to harness the energy of the sun. He’s just asked Alice to be his wife, just gone to a ballet… And is amazed at how her family can do just what they want, evading taxes, making fireworks in the basement – lilies of the field. I’d love a practical joker like Tony. The screaming about fifteen-inch long mice in a fancy restaurant and NUTS stuck on Alice’s back was gold.”
  • November 7: a childhood rhyme (I wanted to be the lady) – “…Ride a cock-horse to Banbury Cross, to see a fine lady upon a white horse/Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she shall have music wherever she goes.”
  • 2010 April 19: phone cleanup chronicles (why don’t I do this anymore???)
  • September 8: forgotten aspirations, reading The Parrot’s Theorem and The Best American Science and Nature writing – “WOW. I wish I could be a science/math/engineering writer. I do want to write.”
  • 2011 January 4: “Last night Ribi and I talked about her theme for 2011: indulgence. All-out-ness. She said, ‘Why should I expect much unless I give my best?’ And she was right… I have high hopes, and never mind if everything conspires to crush them down. It’s my 26th year, and by golly, it’s going to be awesome.” (This was the day I also listed what I would do with 30 million pesos, hahaha.)

And now it’s time for more Digibak!
